| Several of my friends (Mrs. H-B, Melyngoch, and most recently, Marcue) have kept detailed to-do lists on their blogs when they are feeling stressed out by everything needing to get done. Because I thought my head was going to explode at work today, I wrote copious notes on small sheets of paper. I think Marcue and I have the same system of reminder notes...maybe it's because we both work in the library! Imagine that. Anyway, feel free to read. Or not. This is just so I can keep my mind normal and have some level of accountability in getting things done.
Apartment Stuff
- Move entertainment center from Ol' Blule Eyes' place to mine.
- Call D. about picking up entertainment center.
- Call Mika about getting the key to OBE's place.
- Coordinate boys to move entertainment center.
- Move furniture in living room. (I did, and it looked bad...so I'll just move everything into the correct place when the construction is done.)
- Clean out freezer.
- Laundry. (I did one load and called it good. I have enough now to last me until OBE is back in town and I can use his superior laundry room.)
- Wash dishes.
- Clean room.
- Clean out purses.
- Clean Giggles' cage.
- Vacuum everything.
- Dust.
- Organize books.
- Set up entertainment center.
- Organize DVDs/videos (yes I'm old).
- Call Comcast about cable bill.
- Harrass CFC. (Partly...I still will have to keep tabs on them since the apartment is trill trashed.)
- Find out if we can store anything in furnace closet.
- Find out if they will do more work on the ceilings today. (Called - she will get back to me on questions...)
- Figure out where to put displaced things from furnace closet.
- Ask BH to saw shelf for furnace closet.
- Sit down with J.B.and M. about apartment stuff (cleaning, rent distribution, utilities, space, etc.)
- Somehow get two girls moved in with construction currently being done on the apartment.
- Move J.B.'s stuff into other bedroom so M. can move her stuff in?
Errands
- Take stuff to Goodwill.
- Drop off dry cleaning. (OBE took care of this for me...thanks, sweetness.)
- Take library books back.
- Go to IKEA
- Buy a printer table, two lamps, something to cover printer. (And some other stuff.)
- Eat Swedish meatballs.
- Put together IKEA purchases.
- Get shelf brackets.
- Buy a thumb drive.
- Buy notebook
- Buy a 3-hole punch.
- Buy expense ledger.
- Buy shampoo and hair gunk. Maybe conditioner too?
- Groceries.
- Take phone in to be fixed? (False alarm - the phone was acting weird so I reset it, and it wouldn't recognize the same battery. A couple of hours later, it just started working again. Sweet.)
- Get a new parking pass for my apartment.
Relief Society
- Visit teach on Thursday.
- Schedule visiting teaching for Thursday. (E-mailed, awaiting confirmation...)
- E-mail Scholarastastic to confirm.
- Call a visiting teaching coordinator.

- Edit RS listserv.
- Talk to J.B. about pres. message on the 6th.

- Make welcome packets for new girls.
- Ask J.B. to help with new member packets.
- E-mail J.B. welcome packet files.
- Figure out if the RS has any colored paper (Per Control - she gave me a bunch)
- Search for lost girls, move records if necessary.
- Create visit log for presidency use in the coming year.
- Go through RS files and notebooks. (1 down, 3 to go)
- Make sure I get new member sheets from P. for our RS directory.
- Transfer out old records from summer. (Ready to do on Sunday)
- Make sure B. and A. get reimbursed.
- Think about something to say to introduce myself on Sunday.
- Talk to J.K. about freshman dinner. (E-mailed...still in discussion)
- Visit/coordinate visits to all the new girls.
School Stuff
- Sign up for SLIS listservs.
- Talk to my boss about schedule.
- Attend orientation.
- Make sure my tuition waiver goes through. (Check back on Friday, which is when they send staff stuff to the bursar, per tuition lady.)
- Find out if my staff ID transfers over to student status. (I think I just need to go get a new card made - it doesn't have to be done right now.)
- Cancel gym membership.
- Find out if I can get a seperate IU student e-mail address. (Called - they'll send me some info at some point...it's a bad time of year, apparently.) (After reading the stuff they sent me, I kind of think I don't care enough. All the SLIS listservs are under my gmail account, so I don't think too much will fill my work inbox. I'll just have to check work e-mail from home and not be tempted to mess with anything from work from there.)
- Find out immunization dates from Shmee.

- Call Listle about Badam's baptism.
- Pick up C. Tuesday night.
- Trick P. into getting her instead.
- Let OBE into his apartment Wednesday night.
- Remember to give him his electric bill.
- Still go to work all day and somehow be productive.
- Don't cry.

| Blah blah blah, I know I never post, blah blah blah. I'm posting! I have more to say about this at a later time, so patience, dear reader(s). Prepare yourself, this is a long one...
As some of you may know, my grandmother died two weeks ago, and I spent last week in Tooele, Fruitah (aka Utah - I know, it's hard to remember the real name) attending her funeral and spending time with my mother, sisters, and extended family. I had gone into the trip feeling much more relieved than upset at my grandma's death because the past few years have been such a sad struggle for my mom and my aunt, and of course there's that whole eternal family side of it, and her passing wasn't unexpected in any way. I just didn't see a reason to be very upset. Needless to say, the funeral was much more difficult than I had anticipated, but not necessarily in a bad way. I knew I'd cry no matter what since any kind of ceremony does that to me, and I was glad to have those last few moments with Grandma, in which she looked so beautiful and calm, and I could hear her voice so clearly in my head, saying "yah" instead of "yeah". My sisters and cousin gave the most wonderful tributes to her life, and spoke on promises we've been made that will ensure our continued happiness, and I felt so privileged to be a member of my family.
One point that was made that I had never really understood (it's a running joke in my family that we know next to nothing about our history because my mom never divulges any information about it) was just how Grandma gave of herself in every aspect of her life. Not only did she support us emotionally and with constant love, she often gave physically to our well-being. I know that I have my straight teeth thanks to Grandma and her insistence on paying for my braces, so I can attribute singlehandedly to her any social success I've had in my life. While this is of course a trivial necessity (if immensely important to me), I was reminded of how remarkable my grandmother was during my sister's talk, through the stories of constant service and sacrifice that marked Grandma's life. Not only did she raise two daughters after her divorce, she also took in and raised her eight-year-old niece after her sister Leora died of cancer, and accepted and loved her stepchildren after remarrying many years later. She was proud of her family, both of her heritage and of her children and extended family, and always made us feel like her house was the most comfortable and relaxed place in the world.
The rest of our time in Tooele was spent reminiscing on our extremely happy memories of Grandma, who was a character, to say the least. Since I know I've talked up my grandmother's spunk to a few friends, I wanted to record a few of my favorite memories of her. I'm not censoring these, so please be warned that Grandma saw no problem with swearing.
- Grandma loved to read the local newspaper and cut out articles that she thought we would enjoy, especially those about anything Mormon related, which are of course plentiful in Utah. When I was in Denmark, she sent me piles of articles about Donny Osmond and the fact that he was starring in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dream Coat. I have no interest in Donny Osmond and hate musicals, but the fact that he's Mormon was good enough for Grandma to assume I'd want to know all about it.
- My cousin told me that she'd had Grandma over for dinner once and was thrilled to show off her cooking skills as a new bride. She served squash and Grandma asked how she'd prepared it. She said "I just sprinkled on a little brown sugar and butter", to which Grandma replied "Aw, hell, Karen, even I'd taste good sprinkled with a little brown sugar and butter."
- Grandma was a lifelong Democrat, and wasn't afraid to state her opinion on politics. After the Monica Lewinsky scandal, she heard an interview on the radio in which Orrin Hatch, her most hated of all Republicans, said that Bill Clinton was a jerk. Apparently, the radio station made a mix of this, looping "jerk" over and over again. Grandma thought this was so funny, so whenever she talked about Orrin Hatch, she would chant "Jerk! Jerk! Jerk! Jerk!" and would sometimes do a little dance with it. My brother and I thought this was the greatest thing ever, so we encouraged it often and would clap in time and chant with her.
- Grandma sent me a book when I was about eleven years old called The White Indian Boy, which was written by a local man about the Tooele/Grantsville area. As most of you know, I alphabetize my books and read them in that order, adding new books into the system at the expense of books that are at the end of the alphabet. So White Indian Boy sat in my book pile for a bit, and Grandma eventually asked about it. After explaining my system to her, she continued to ask me when I was going to read it, and it became a running joke that I would always rather read anything else than White Indian Boy. It started out that I would name another book I'd rather read, but then it turned into ending phone calls and every letter from Denmark with "Oh, and Grandma, I'd rather read the back of this cereal box than White Indian Boy" or "I'd rather read this brochure on pancreatic cancer than White Indian Boy". She had such a good sense of humor and always thought it was funny to see how absurd I could make the statement. (Yes, I did eventually read it.)
- "Life's a shit sandwich, and then you die."
- During a really difficult period in my early twenties, during which I had dropped out of school and was struggling with depression, I went up to visit Grandma on a road trip with my brother. Even though I was perfectly fine during the visit, she obviously knew what was going on (I hadn't talked to her about it, but I guess my mom had) and she didn't want to upset me in any way. So everything I said was countered by her with "If that's what you want, that's perfectly okay" or things of that nature. I'd just gotten my hair cut really short (it was stylish back then!...?) and my brother kept making fun of it. Finally, I asked Grandma if I had a lesbian hair cut, to which she replied "Ann, if you want to have a lesbian haircut, that's perfectly okay with me."
- She once asked my sister Elizabeth "Why are you wearing that shit-colored skirt?"
- Perhaps my favorite memory of Grandma was once of the last times I talked to her. After she started to suffer from Alzheimer's, it was difficult to talk to her on the phone because she had a difficult time responding and eventually didn't know who I was. I talked to her one Thanksgiving a couple of years ago and asked her if she would rather have George W. Bush or Dick Cheney to dinner, knowing that if she were healthy, she would start swearing and talk about how much she hated both. I wasn't sure what to expect, but in the most feeble voice, she whispered "Well.................I would have both....and..........................what's a good poison that you can't taste?" I lost it.
That's my Grandma. I love her.

| Bah! So I know I'm terrible about blogging. Here's the problem: I have a lot going on in my life, and the idea of getting online for a long time is pretty much the last thing I want, since I'm on a computer all day at work and also doing stuff online for Relief Society in the evenings. Writing a blog entry seems like such a commitment. Of course, as I write this, I have to admit that I'm more than willing to waste a lot of time online. The truth is, I have been working on several blog entries but haven't felt as though they've been close enough to completed to post. So La Dolcezza and Control conspired against me and tagged me with this list to make me post. Bah! Maybe I need a simple survey to get me in the mood again... i am - ashamed of the Goth things that I like.
i think - that wedge shoes are hideous.
i want - to be traveling in Romania right now.
i have - more books than is probably healthy. i wish - that I lived in Manhattan pretty often. i hate - pumpkin pie and the word "meal". And worms. And Brazil. And South American soccer teams. And you. i miss - the people that I really love, all of which either don't live near me in Bloomy or will be leaving in the next year or so. i fear - getting rid of my favorite Converse sneakers. They don't make that style anymore, with the red stripe! i feel - inclined to eat another root beer float but suspect that would be a bad idea. i hear - that Heroes is a really great show, but it just doesn't interest me. i smell - cold air, smoke, and cooking meat and I think of Denmark.
i search - for the best shade of red lipstick for my complexion. i wonder - if I'll ever feel like I've caught up with everything I need to get done. i regret - that old anarchist. i love - books that look like scrapbooks and journals. Oooo and if you add a food slant to it, that's my favorite! i care - too much about politics. :) i always - dress as nice as I can on Sundays. i am not - impressed by Amy Winehouse. i believe - in libraries. i dance - all the freaking time. What is wrong with me? Jesse McCartney, you have a lot to answer for. i sing - alto and harmonies always. i don't always - make an effort to be presentable at work. No current super secret crushes to look out for. i write - blog entries on Post-its before I post them. i win - at Trivial Pursuit against my friends, but not against my family. i lose - sleep over my irrational worries. i never - go to sleep before 1:30 am. i listen - to NPR for half the day at work, but often get caught up listening to songs through YouTube. i can usually be found - at the library, or walking in pretty neighborhoods. Or watching Tivo'd shows while doing RS stuff. i'm scared - of the Titanic and deep water. i read - all the food and fashion blogs I can handle, and the NYTimes, and the New Yorker, and other magazines that I get for the sake of getting mail. Did I mention the mystery novels? Or the English classics? I'll read nearly everything. i'm happy about - my life. It is good. I like it. | | |
